A counterargument I have heard is that people once believed that their ties to family and local community were important. This phenomenon of breaking up extended families and turning everyone into deracinated, anomic, atomized, alienated individuals who scatter across the nation, or even across the world, chasing high-status, high-paying work, is, if we take the long view, very new. As a culture I am not sure it's working out fur us, but nobody asked me.
