Somebody whom I know read the book not long after this thread was made, he says the article was clickbait and that it's neither particularly gay, about immigrants or much of a romance. The protagonist briefly entertains the idea of entering a homosexual relationship with an acquaintance, but seeks guidance from various classical and contemporary Islamic scholars and ultimately finds solace in his Faith and reconnects with his estranged son.
