I think it kinda depends on the instinct. If it's cute and harmless, like a feline anthro licking their arms sometimes, it should be kept. If it's something that's too gross, like canine anthros sniffing eachothers butts, that can be gotten rid of lol. 

Even some "harmful" behaviors I think should be kept, but only the ones that aren't all that bad. Think like foxes being very energetic and having a hard time focusing, or rabbits being easily startled. That way they feel more like imperfect character traits instead of instincts

The animal behaviors are an important part of any anthro, but they shouldn't constantly get in the way of them functioning as sapient beings more than human primate instincts do. 

In the story that I'm cooking the cat-like alien species is basically all of the original cat instincts and environmental preferences but tempered by higher intellect.

They rub fureheads on stuff and others to signify belonging fur instance, but it's become cultural behavior. Licking themselves fur cleaning is considered primitive, so they use specialized brushes instead, they have a food culture based around making raw meats  safe to eat without actual cooking etc.

From a purely selfish point of view I think it would be really cute if they retained a lot of the social aspects, canine anthros wagging their tales when they see you, feline anthros unable to hide the purring when you're close or just rubbing their face against you out of instinctual compulsion. Really really cute. Getting all puffy during winter months, ahhhhh.

But idk about the biological functions, I can see it getting pretty annoying coming home to your waifur pissing on the carpet again. Heat cycles are just coomslop in all representations I've seen, beastars explores these biological aspects pretty well, mostly focusing on the prey/predator dynamic but sub plots and background characters tend to touch on it. Idk where I'm going with this, I'm still thinking about the furmer paragraph

Agreed, I think anthros should just have the same general sexual instincts as humans, so no heat or whatever. Unfurtuntately fur them I think that means female anthros would have to have periods tho...

I imagine most people would emphasize the instincts that make that anthro appealing while minimizing the unappealing instincts (or at least present those traits in a joking matter).

I question how furries are able to keep track of all of these traits without having to become a zoologist. I had a hard time trying to do research on this matter and I'm not willing to spend any money on fun fact books to know how quirky my waifur would be.

I know heat kind of necessitates sex, but I don't think it should be the whole schick if it's represented, like we can imagine our Aryan hmoaf protag only encountering his fluffy war bride through her heat, they hookup but the Aryan catches feelings while it was a purely biologically driven act by the war bride and she's less receptive to him after the fact, then you know, ensuing story where he tries to win her affection, etc etc. of course this needs to be fleshed out more, but its somewhat comparable to Komen fuufu

But that's just it! Our protag has caught feelings fur her despite her circumstance and pursues her in attempt to win her affection! If I knew how to write I could maybe demonstrate it in a better way, but you know it's not an uncommon happening irl too, you hear about guys that fall in love with prostitutes and whatever. 
The same dynamic could be explored with anthro heat cycles (of course I'm assuming that an anthro wouldn't bond during a heat encounter, idk the bio mechanics of it blah blah, but fur the purposes of this hypothetical story they don't). Now that I think of it, it's kinda like how legoshi fell in love with haru iirc, or at least got the hots fur her. Idk
