It does stand to reason that as a character becomes more popular more people are likely to react to seeing it.
Board populations have changed a bit since then but I wonder what would happen if you were to repeat the experiment with some cool but relatively unknown character. Would the reaction be different?
From limited personal experience, people don't react to pics often, unless they are the focus of the thread. Say, 1/5 times someone comments on the image, 1/50 times they request a source and 4/5 times there's no reaction (no replies or people address the points raised in the text ignoring the image).
Being associated with racism has surely improved her standings among the shes-just-like-me crowd, but the continuous posting itself must have contributed as well, causing her to percolate into the board culture to an extent. Tourist shows up, sees fox, thinks she's like one of them pepes, possibly adopts fox.
