I use KDE plasma every now and again but i usually find myself going back to gnome

I'm generally not a big fan of windows style taskbars and KDE apps always felt a little bloated to me

Not that gnome doesn't have it's issues. I've noticed that some gnome apps have a slight delay when starting.

Use dual boot and try Linux Mint.
Limit your use of Windows to things you can't or don't know how to use on Linux. Try to use it less and less because you need to learn how to use it, and the best way to learn is through experience. With experience, you'll realize that the distro you're using isn't ideal, and you'll look fur another one until you feel truly comfurtable.

Replies: >>5446
>>5445
I shopped around for different distros for a while and landed here and haven't wanted to switch. Compiling stuff is largely for the fun of it, I get to play a minimalism game where I only install what I need and I compile what I use. It's basically as close as I get to fully configuring my system myself without going all out and doing LFS which is a little too much autism for me. Having a wiki and a community to fall back on when I don't know how to do something is nice, and otherwise just setting up my tty login to launch xinitrc and putting stuff there is enjoyable. Overall, the less "black box" there is the more I like it, so actually fluffing with the config files for stuff is nice. Once you set it up it pretty much just works, but the setup is long and involved. I also would not recommend it if you don't have a decent computer because otherwise you're compiling overnight most of the time.

After switching to a window manager I could never go back to a desktop environment. Doing things with keybinds and just getting stuff always fullscreen is cool. Mentally I know where I put my windows so if I need to go somewhere I just press one or two keys on my keyboard and I'm there, I launch terminals with a dedicated keybind, I use dmenu to quick launch stuff from anywhere easily. Quite nice at least for the level of autism I'm willing to put into my computer (which I think everyone should to some extent, blindly using windows and just pressing big shiny buttons to do what you need to do is lame normalfag behavior)
Replies: >>5447
>>5446
>the level of autism I'm willing to put into my computer
Fur me it's quite the opposite, I prefer the defaults and configure my system as little as possible. My goal is to install it and be ready to go, I don't even change the background because I always have something open and doing something. I'm also using a laptop so I did like window managers when I tried i3 and having everything full screen, but I fluffing hate having to install so much stuff just to get volume/brightness buttons working or showing how much battery I have left. I also prefer things looking the same so when I installed Dolphin as my file manager I ended up pulling in all of KDE anyways so what's even the point lol that's why I just stick with KDE and set up window rules to launch everything full screen and shortcuts Meta+1-9 to switch tabs
Replies: >>5448
>>5447
>I prefer the defaults and configure my system as little as possible
Well I don't mean like ricing when it comes to configuration. As you can see I'm using essentially barebones dwm, visuals I don't really care to mess with. Keybinds usually stay default as well, the configuring I like is more backend type stuff like manually making my .xinitrc, .Xresources, my .bashrc, symlinking stuff to my local bin dir if it's a binary (very few), that sort of thing.

I have avoided getting anything KDE related because they all pull the entire KDE ecosystem. I use gimp for drawing instead of krita, blender for video editing instead of kdenlive, etc.

How is GIMP for drawing in your experience? picrel is from a very old version of gimp and it seems alright, but Krita is a lot more comfortable and supported when it comes to digital art. I still like GIMP for editing but wouldn't ever use it for drawing

the new GIMP 3.0 has better support fur drawing tablets compared to older versions (it finally detects your tablet without needing to close and reopen the program anymore), I do like Krita default brushes but the software is more bloated than GIMP overall, I would also say that Kdenlive is a better video editor but Shotcut also gets the job done.
