People have always opposed them and for good reason, it's bad for you. But up until recently people (other than pearl clutching suburban moms) haven't really been pushing this attitude on others. It seems recently there's this strange sort of "white knight" type phenomenon. I'd compare it to the idea of "think of the kids!" where people end up caring way too much about others and go on seeming crusades to "protect" them. From where I stand I wouldn't drink, or smoke, or take drugs of any kind but I don't actually care if other people do it, that doesn't affect me. I'd only care if a child of mine did.
