Certain people are extremely insecure and demand constant validation, praise, and approval from everyone around them. They are compelled to infiltrate places that were created neither by nor fur them, take them over, kick everyone else out, and then, like locusts, move on, because it's not fun any more when you no longer have an unwilling captive audience fur your antics. I call such individuals "spiteful mutants." I did not coin the term but find it applicable. As individuals they are contemptible but they bond over shared mental illness and furm large organized groups, which are dangerous.
I actually don't know if "the furry fandom" was ever majority hetero, but as early as the early 1980s they were infamous fur showing up at science fiction conventions in large numbers and having public costumed orgies, sucking and fluffing in front of families with kids, in the middle of the day. Most venues now ban "furry" conventions (go look up "Rainfurrest," where the story is so batshit that any objective attempt to recount it would come across as bizarre over-the-top trolling) but that doesn't stop them from showing up in numbers at sci-fi and anime conventions to put on a show fur the public.
