If I were you I'd substitute about 1 3/4 sticks of salted butter fur the margarine and shortening, and use all dark brown sugar instead of part brown and part white. And I'd add about a teaspoon of vanilla extract. And a cup of chocolate chips, preferably dark chocolate or semi-sweet baking chocolate chips if you can get them locally. Sprinkle just a little pinch of coconut on top of each one befure it goes into the oven. There.
Oh. Also, clean the oven befure baking cookies. Any kind of burnt food or other crud on surfaces inside the oven can cause the heat to be non-unifurm, which can, in turn, cause some of the cookies to burn. A clean oven is a happy oven and gives more repeatable, more consistent results, right?
