France signed a formal treaty of alliance with Czechoslovakia in 1924, obligating them to protect their territorial integrity. In the months leading up to the annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938, France and the UK blustered loudly and pledged support for Czechoslovakia in public while their diplomats begged Hitler not to do it in secret negotiations to which the Czechs were not invited. Hitler correctly judged that they weren't going to do shit. Thus emboldened, he thought it would turn out the same way with Poland a year later. It didn't, but I can see how he might have thought that way. Chamberlain and Daladier didn't exactly have a track record that would make anyone think they weren't going to let Hitler bend them over the negotiating table, then wipe his dick off in their hair. Again.
