I think the crux of the problem is that the drive where I put it for storage is formatted NTFS, because I also needed to back up stuff from a Windows partition, and it was convenient for me to be able to mount the entire volume and view it and work with it from Windows also. NTFS file permissions and UN*X file permissions don't play nicely together, and this is one of the ways in which that manifests.

I always thought of art as a means of communication, and that requires it to originate in one conscious mind, intended for another conscious mind. When I click the orange button the software is not communicating with me. It doesn't have a message for me. It makes an arrangement of pixels, sometimes one pleasing to my eye, sometimes not. I can generate a large number of them and sort through them, selecting the ones I think are better than the others. That isn't art. I can post the image here, but that isn't art either, any more than posting a well-known meme picture or video.
